When playing outside I noticed one girl clutching a huge rock. I asked her about it.
“It’s my magic rock” she told me.
When I asked what made it magic she thought for a while and then said “It draws”
She raced to the path to test out her theory and, yes it did in fact ‘draw’. It made white lines on the path.
Suddenly the other children wanted magic rocks too. They went on a hunt to try and find one of their own. They tried so many different rocks and squealed with delight when one made marks. They discussed the color of the marks, how difficult they were to make (you had to press much harder with some rocks than others) and how to guess which rocks were going to be magic.
What wonderful child-led investigative work.
